As we develop new materials to increase performance of lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles, the impact of potential safety and reliability issues become increasingly important. In addition to electrochemical performance increases (capacity, energy, cycle life, etc.), there are a variety of materials advancements that can be made to improve lithium-ion battery safety. Issues including energetic thermal runaway, electrolyte decomposition and flammability, anode SEI stability, and cell-level abuse tolerance behavior. Introduction of a next generation materials, such as silicon based anode, requires a full understanding of the abuse response and degradation mechanisms for these anodes. This work aims to understand the breakdown of these materials during abuse conditions in order to develop an inherently safe power source for our next generation electric vehicles.

Flow batteries are an attractive technology for energy storage of grid-scale renewables. However, performance issues related to ion-exchange membrane (IEM) fouling and crossover of species have limited the success of flow batteries. In this work we propose the use of the solid-state sodium-ion conductor NaSICON as an IEM to fully eliminate active species crossover in room temperature, aqueous, neutral pH flow batteries. We measure the room temperature conductivity of NaSICON at 2.83–4.67 mS cm−1 and demonstrate stability of NaSICON in an aqueous electrolyte with conductivity values remaining near 2.5 mS cm−1 after 66 days of exposure. Charge and discharge of a full H-cell battery as well as symmetric cycling in a flow battery configuration using NaSICON as an IEM in both cases demonstrates the capability of the solid-state IEM. Extensive analysis of aged cells through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and UV–vis spectroscopy show no contaminant species having crossed over the NaSICON membrane after 83 days of exposure, yielding an upper limit to the permeability of NaSICON of 4 × 10−10 cm2 min−1. The demonstration of NaSICON as an IEM enables a wide new range of chemistries for application to flow batteries that would previously be impeded by species crossover and associated degradation.

The effect of materials level changes (electrolytes, additives, silicon particle size, silicon loading, etc.) to cell level abuse response and runaway reactions will be determined using several techniques. Experimentation will start with base material evaluations in coin cells and overall runaway energy will be evaluated using techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC). The goal is to understand the effect of materials parameters on the runaway reactions, which can then be correlated to the response seen on larger cells (18650). Experiments conducted showed that there was significant response from these electrodes. Efforts to minimize risk during testing were taken by development of a smaller capacity cylindrical design in order to quantify materials decision and how they manifest during abuse response.

As lithium-ion battery technologies mature, the size and energy of these systems continues to increase (> 50 kWh for EVs); making safety and reliability of these high energy systems increasingly important. While most material advances for lithium-ion chemistries are directed toward improving cell performance (capacity, energy, cycle life, etc.), there are a variety of materials advancements that can be made to improve lithium-ion battery safety. Issues including energetic thermal runaway, electrolyte decomposition and flammability, anode SEI stability, and cell-level abuse tolerance continue to be critical safety concerns. This report highlights work with our collaborators to develop advanced materials to improve lithium-ion battery safety and abuse tolerance and to perform cell-level characterization of new materials.

This report describes advances in electrolytes for lithium primary battery systems. Electrolytes were synthesized that utilize organosilane materials that include anion binding agent functionality. Numerous materials were synthesized and tested in lithium carbon monofluoride battery systems for conductivity, impedance, and capacity. Resulting electrolytes were shown to be completely non-flammable and showed promise as co-solvents for electrolyte systems, due to low dielectric strength.

In this paper we will discuss our preliminary thermal and electrochemical data aimed at developing a robust nonflammable Li-CFx cell capable of wide temperature operation. To accomplish this goal, we are evaluating a thermally stable solvent comprised of an anion binding agent (ABA) and lithium fluoride (LiF), typically at a 1:1 molar ratio. In conventional carbonate based electrolytes, ABA is soluble while LiF remains insoluble. However, the neutral ABA solubilizes LiF and forms a salt complex represented as Li+(ABAF-). We are exploiting this unique feature and apply this strategy to CFx chemistry to improve cell performance, due to the CFx cell chemistry generating LiF as discharge product. Continuous solvation of the salt mixture during discharge allows for utilization of electrolytes initially containing sub stoichiometric amount of LiF. The practical benefits are reduced cell weight, mitigation of electrode fouling, and consequently better low temperature performance. Electrolytes containing dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP), 1M tris(pentafluorophenyl) borane (TPFB) and varying concentrations of LiF (1M; 0.5M and 0.1M) were prepared and characterized for ionic conductivity and voltage stability. In general, ionic conductivity decreases with decreasing LiF concentration. The room temperature conductivity for the DMMP 1M TPFB:1M LiF is ~ 9mS/cm and ~3mS/cm for the 1M TPFB:0.1M LiF. Unlike the conductivity, the electrochemical voltage stability did not vary substantially with LiF concentration and the electrolytes showed a stable voltage window in the range 0-3.5V vs. Li+/Li, which is substantially wider than the Li-CFx cell voltage. Flammability measurement performed at our thermal abuse facility demonstrated that the electrolyte was nonflammable. Discharge performance of CFx materials obtained from several vendors was evaluated in 2032 coin cells at room temperature. Experimental results demonstrate a reduction in ohmic resistance and interfacial resistance during discharge for a cell containing lower concentrations of added LiF compared to ABA. These observations are a direct demonstration that the unbound ABA in the electrolyte dissolves the LiF generated in the discharge reaction.
This report documents work that was performed under the Laboratory Directed Research and Development project, Science of Battery Degradation. The focus of this work was on the creation of new experimental and theoretical approaches to understand atomistic mechanisms of degradation in battery electrodes that result in loss of electrical energy storage capacity. Several unique approaches were developed during the course of the project, including the invention of a technique based on ultramicrotoming to cross-section commercial scale battery electrodes, the demonstration of scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM) to probe lithium transport mechanisms within Li-ion battery electrodes, the creation of in-situ liquid cells to observe electrochemical reactions in real-time using both transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and STXM, the creation of an in-situ optical cell utilizing Raman spectroscopy and the application of the cell for analyzing redox flow batteries, the invention of an approach for performing ab initio simulation of electrochemical reactions under potential control and its application for the study of electrolyte degradation, and the development of an electrochemical entropy technique combined with x-ray based structural measurements for understanding origins of battery degradation. These approaches led to a number of scientific discoveries. Using STXM we learned that lithium iron phosphate battery cathodes display unexpected behavior during lithiation wherein lithium transport is controlled by nucleation of a lithiated phase, leading to high heterogeneity in lithium content at each particle and a surprising invariance of local current density with the overall electrode charging current. We discovered using in-situ transmission electron microscopy that there is a size limit to lithiation of silicon anode particles above which particle fracture controls electrode degradation. From electrochemical entropy measurements, we discovered that entropy changes little with degradation but the origin of degradation in cathodes is kinetic in nature, i.e. lower rate cycling recovers lost capacity. Finally, our modeling of electrode-electrolyte interfaces revealed that electrolyte degradation may occur by either a single or double electron transfer process depending on thickness of the solid-electrolyte-interphase layer, and this cross-over can be modeled and predicted.

Anion receptors that bind strongly to fluoride anions in organic solvents can help dissolve the lithium fluoride discharge products of primary carbon monofluoride (CFx) batteries, thereby preventing the clogging of cathode surfaces and improving ion conductivity. The receptors are also potentially beneficial to rechargeable lithium ion and lithium air batteries.We apply Density Functional Theory (DFT) to show that an oxalate-based pentafluorophenyl-boron anion receptor binds as strongly, or more strongly, to fluoride anions than many phenyl-boron anion receptors proposed in the literature. Experimental data shows marked improvement in electrolyte conductivity when this oxalate anion receptor is present. The receptor is sufficiently electrophilic that organic solvent molecules compete with F- for boron-site binding, and specific solvent effects must be considered when predicting its F- affinity. To further illustrate the last point, we also perform computational studies on a geometrically constrained boron ester that exhibits much stronger gas-phase affinity for both F- and organic solvent molecules. After accounting for specific solvent effects, however, its net F- affinity is about the same as the simple oxalate-based anion receptor. Finally, we propose that LiF dissolution in cyclic carbonate organic solvents, in the absence of anion receptors, is due mostly to the formation of ionic aggregates, not isolated F- ions.

Entropy profiles of lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) electrodes were measured at various stages in their cycle life to examine performance degradation and cycling-induced changes, or lack thereof, in thermodynamics. LiCoO2 electrodes were cycled at C/2 rate in half-cells (vs. lithium anodes) up to 20 cycles or C/5 rate in full cells (vs. MCMB anodes) up to 500 cycles. The electrodes were then subjected to entropy measurements (∂E/∂T, where E is open-circuit potential and T is temperature) in half-cells at regular intervals over the approximate range 0.5 < x < 1 in LixCoO2. Despite significant losses in capacity, the cycling did not result in any change to the overall shape of the entropy profile, indicating retention of the LiCoO2 structure, lithium insertion mechanism, and thermodynamics. This confirms that cycling-induced performance degradation in LiCoO2 electrodes is primarily caused by kinetic barriers that increase with cycling. Electrodes cycled at C/5 exhibited a subtle, quantitative, and gradual change in the entropy profile in the narrow potential range of the hexagonal-to-monoclinic phase transition. The observed change is indicative of a decrease in the intralayer lithium ordering that occurs at these potentials, and it demonstrates that a cycling-induced structural disorder accompanies the kinetic degradation mechanisms.

Magnesium batteries are alternatives to the use of lithium ion and nickel metal hydride secondary batteries due to magnesium's abundance, safety of operation, and lower toxicity of disposal. The divalency of the magnesium ion and its chemistry poses some difficulties for its general and industrial use. This work developed a continuous and fibrous nanoscale network of the cathode material through the use of electrospinning with the goal of enhancing performance and reactivity of the battery. The system was characterized and preliminary tests were performed on the constructed battery cells. We were successful in building and testing a series of electrochemical systems that demonstrated good cyclability maintaining 60-70% of discharge capacity after more than 50 charge-discharge cycles.

Even after decades of research, Li-ion cells still lack thermal stability. A number of approaches, including adding fire retardants or fluoro compounds to the electrolyte to mitigate fire, have been investigated. These additives improved the thermal stability of the cells (only marginally) but not enough for use in transportation applications. Recent investigations indicate that hydrofluoro-ethers are promising as nonflammable additives1. We describe here the results of our studies on electrolytes containing the hydrofluoro-ethers in cells fabricated at Sandia. In particular, we are investigating two solvents as nonflammable additives. These are: (1) 2-trifluoromethyl-3-methoxyperfluoropentane {l_brace}TMMP{r_brace} and (2) 2-trifluoro-2-fluoro-3-difluoropropoxy-3-difluoro-4-fluoro-5-trifluoropentane {l_brace}TPTP{r_brace}. These electrolytes not only have good thermal stability compared to the conventional electrolytes but respectable ionic conductivity. Sandia made 18650 cells successfully completed the formational cycle. The impedance behavior is typical of Li-ion cells.

In this study, (CFx)n cathode reaction during discharge has been investigated using in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD). Mathematical treatment of the in situ XRD data set was performed using multivariate curve resolution with alternating least squares (MCR–ALS), a technique of multivariate analysis. MCR–ALS analysis successfully separated the relatively weak XRD signal intensity due to the chemical reaction from the other inert cell component signals. The resulting dynamic reaction component revealed the loss of (CFx)n cathode signal together with the simultaneous appearance of LiF by-product intensity. Careful examination of the XRD data set revealed an additional dynamic component which may be associated with the formation of an intermediate compound during the discharge process.

At Sandia National Laboratories, we have built 18650 Li-ion cells with Li reference electrode for in situ characterization of electrodes including impedance and other electrochemical properties. At a 200 mA ({approx}C/5 rate) discharge, the cell gave {approx}900 mAh. Impedance measurements indicate that the anode dominates the cell impedance. For example, at 0 C, the anode and cathode impedances at 10 mHz were around 149 and 53 m{Omega}, respectively, and the total cell impedance at 10 mHz was {approx}203 m{Omega}. The three-electrode configuration also permits measurement of individual electrode voltages during charge and discharge. During discharge, while the cell voltage drops from 4.1 to 3 V, the cathode and the anode voltages change from 4.1 to 3.7 and from {approx}0 to 0.7 V, respectively. During charge, the cathode and anode voltages trace back to their initial values before discharging. The voltage swing for the anode is higher than that for the cathode. This also indicates that the impedance for the anode is higher than for the cathode. Pulse measurements on the cells indicate the voltage drop of the full-cell is equal to the sum of the anode and cathode voltage drops for a 2 A discharge pulse.

Battery life is an important, yet technically challenging, issue for battery development and application. Adequately estimating battery life requires a significant amount of testing and modeling effort to validate the results. Integrated battery testing and modeling is quite feasible today to simulate battery performance, and therefore applicable to predict its life. A relatively simple equivalent-circuit model (ECM) is used in this work to show that such an integrated approach can actually lead to a high-fidelity simulation of a lithium-ion cell's performance and life. This paper describes the author's 2- and 3-electrode impedance results of metal oxide cathodes. These results were extracted from impedance data on 18650 Li-ion cells. The impedance results indicate that the ohmic resistance of the cell is very nearly constant with state-of-charge (SOC) and temperature. For example, the ohmic resistance of 18650 Li-ion cells is around 60 m{Omega} for different SOCS (4.1V to 3.0V) and temperatures from 35 C to {minus}20 C. However, the interfacial impedance shows a modest increase with SOC and a huge increase of between 10 and 100 times with decreasing temperature. For example, in the temperature regime (35 C down to {minus}20 C) the overall cell impedance has increased from nearly 200 m{Omega} to 8,000 m{Omega}. Most of the increase in cell impedance comes from the metal oxide cathode/electrolyte interface.
Electrical and chemical measurements have been made on 18650-size lithium-ion cells that have been exposed to calendar and cycle life aging at temperatures up to 70 C. Aging times ranged from 2 weeks at the highest temperature to several months under more moderate conditions. After aging, the impedance behavior of the cells was reversed from that found originally, with lower impedance at low state of charge and the total impedance was significantly increased. Investigations using a reference electrode showed that these changes are primarily due to the behavior of the cathode. Measurements of cell impedance as a function of cell voltage reveal a pronounced minimum in the total impedance at approximately 40--50% state-of-charge (SOC). Chemical analysis data are presented to support the SOC assignments for aged and unaged cells. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data have been recorded at several intermediate states of charge to construct the impedance vs. open circuit voltage curve for the cell. This information has not previously been available for the LiNi{sub 0.85}Co{sub 0.15}O{sub 2} cathode material. Structural and chemical analysis information obtained from cell components removed during postmortems will also be discussed in order to reveal the true state of charge of the cathode and to develop a more complete lithium inventory for the cell.

Electrical characteristics of hybrid power sources consisting of Li-ion cells and double-layer capacitors were studied at 25 C and {minus}20 C. The cells were initially evaluated for pulse performance and then measured in hybrid modes of operation where they were coupled with the high-power capacitors. Cells manufactured by Panasonic measured at 25 C delivered full capacities of 0.76 Ah for pulses up to 3A and cells from A and T delivered full capacities of 0.73 Ah for pulses up to 4A. Measured cell resistances were 0.15 ohms and 0.12 ohms, respectively. These measurements were repeated at {minus}20 C. Direct coupling of the cells and capacitors (coupled hybrid) using 10F Panasonic capacitors in a 8F series/parallel combination extended the full capacity pulse limits (3.0V threshold) to 5.6A for the Panasonic cells and to 9A for the A and T cells. A similar arrangement using 100F capacitors from Elna in a 60F combination increased the Panasonic cell limit to 10 A. Operation in an uncoupled hybrid mode using uncoupled cell/capacitor discharge allowed fill cell capacity usage at 25 C up to the capacitor discharge limit and showed a factor of 5 improvement in delivered capacity at {minus}20 C.

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis was used to identify thermal reactions in Sony-type lithium-ion cells and to correlate these reactions with interactions of cell constituents and reaction products. An electrochemical half-cell was used to cycle the anode and cathode materials and to set the state-of-charge (SOC). Three temperature regions of interaction were identified and associated with the SOC (degree of Li intercalation) of the cell. Anodes were shown to undergo exothermic reactions as low as 80 C involving decomposition of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. The LiPF{sub 6} salt in the electrolyte (EC:PC:DEC/1M LiPF{sub 6}) was seen to play an essential role in this reaction. DSC analysis of the anodes from disassembled Sony cells showed similar behavior to the half-cell anodes with a strong exotherm beginning in the 80 C--90 C range. Exothermic reactions were also observed in the 200 C--300 C region between the intercalated lithium anodes, the LiPF{sub 6} salt, and the PVDF binder. These reactions were followed by a high-temperature reaction region, 300 C--400 C, also involving the PVDF binder and the intercalated lithium anodes. Cathode exothermic reactions with the PVDF binder were observed above 200 C and increased with the SOC (decreasing Li content in the cathode). No thermal reactions were seen at lower temperatures suggesting that thermal runaway reactions in this type of cell are initiated at the anode. An Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC) was used to perform measurements of thermal runaway on commercial Sony Li-ion cells as a function of SOC. The cells showed sustained thermal output as low as 80 C in agreement with the DSC observations of anode materials but the heating rate was strongly dependent on the SOC.
