Sierra/SD provides a massively parallel implementation of structural dynamics finite element analysis, required for high fidelity, validated models used in modal, vibration, static and shock analysis of structural systems. This manual describes the theory behind many of the constructs in Sierra/SD. For a more detailed description of how to use Sierra/SD, we refer the reader to User's Manual. Many of the constructs in Sierra/SD are pulled directly from published material. Where possible, these materials are referenced herein. However, certain functions in Sierra/SD are specific to our implementation. We try to be far more complete in those areas. The theory manual was developed from several sources including general notes, a programmer_notes manual, the user's notes and of course the material in the open literature.

The goal of the ExaWind project is to enable predictive simulations of wind farms composed of many MW-scale turbines situated in complex terrain. Predictive simulations will require computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for which the mesh resolves the geometry of the turbines, and captures the rotation and large deflections of blades. Whereas such simulations for a single turbine are arguably petascale class, multi-turbine wind farm simulations will require exascale-class resources. The primary code in the ExaWind project is Nalu, which is an unstructured-grid solver for the acoustically-incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and mass continuity is maintained through pressure projection. The model consists of the mass-continuity Poisson-type equation for pressure and a momentum equation for the velocity. For such modeling approaches, simulation times are dominated by linear-system setup and solution for the continuity and momentum systems. For the ExaWind challenge problem, the moving meshes greatly affect overall solver costs as re-initialization of matrices and re-computation of preconditioners is required at every time step We describe in this report our efforts to decrease the setup and solution time for the mass-continuity Poisson system with respect to the benchmark timing results reported in FY18 Q1. Parallel Ellipsoidal Perfectly Matched Layers for Acoustic Helmholtz Problems on Exterior Domains

Exterior acoustic problems occur in a wide range of applications, making the finite element analysis of such problems a common practice in the engineering community. Various methods for truncating infinite exterior domains have been developed, including absorbing boundary conditions, infinite elements, and more recently, perfectly matched layers (PML). PML are gaining popularity due to their generality, ease of implementation, and effectiveness as an absorbing boundary condition. PML formulations have been developed in Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical geometries, but not ellipsoidal. In addition, the parallel solution of PML formulations with iterative solvers for the solution of the Helmholtz equation, and how this compares with more traditional strategies such as infinite elements, has not been adequately investigated. In this paper, we present a parallel, ellipsoidal PML formulation for acoustic Helmholtz problems. To faciliate the meshing process, the ellipsoidal PML layer is generated with an on-the-fly mesh extrusion. Though the complex stretching is defined along ellipsoidal contours, we modify the Jacobian to include an additional mapping back to Cartesian coordinates in the weak formulation of the finite element equations. This allows the equations to be solved in Cartesian coordinates, which is more compatible with existing finite element software, but without the necessity of dealing with corners in the PML formulation. Herein we also compare the conditioning and performance of the PML Helmholtz problem with infinite element approach that is based on high order basis functions. On a set of representative exterior acoustic examples, we show that high order infinite element basis functions lead to an increasing number of Helmholtz solver iterations, whereas for PML the number of iterations remains constant for the same level of accuracy. This provides an additional advantage of PML over the infinite element approach.

BDDC algorithms with deluxe scaling and adaptive selection of primal constraints for Raviart-Thomas vector fields

A BDDC domain decomposition preconditioner is defined by a coarse component, expressed in terms of primal constraints, a weighted average across the interface between the subdomains, and local components given in terms of solvers of local subdomain problems. BDDC methods for vector field problems discretized with Raviart-Thomas finite elements are introduced. The methods are based on a deluxe type of weighted average and an adaptive selection of primal constraints developed to deal with coefficients with high contrast even inside individual subdomains. For problems with very many subdomains, a third level of the preconditioner is introduced. Under the assumption that the subdomains are all built from elements of a coarse triangulation of the given domain, that the meshes of each subdomain are quasi uniform and that the material parameters are constant in each subdomain, a bound is obtained for the condition number of the preconditioned linear system which is independent of the values and the jumps of these parameters across the interface between the subdomains as well as the number of subdomains. Numerical experiments, using the PETSc library, are also presented which support the theory and show the effectiveness of the algorithms even for problems not covered by the theory. Included are also experiments with Brezzi-Douglas-Marini finite element approximations.

A BDDC Algorithm with Deluxe Scaling for Three-Dimensional H(curl) Problems

In this paper, we present and analyze a BDDC algorithm for a class of elliptic problems in the three-dimensional H(curl) space. Compared with existing results, our condition number estimate requires fewer assumptions and also involves two fewer powers of log(H/h), making it consistent with optimal estimates for other elliptic problems. Here, H/h is the maximum of Hi/hi over all subdomains, where Hi and hi are the diameter and the smallest element diameter for the subdomain Ωi. The analysis makes use of two recent developments. The first is a new approach to averaging across the subdomain interfaces, while the second is a new technical tool that allows arguments involving trace classes to be avoided. Numerical examples are presented to confirm the theory and demonstrate the importance of the new averaging approach in certain cases.

A COMPARISON OF TRANSIENT INFINITE ELEMENTS AND TRANSIENT KIRCHHOFF INTEGRAL METHODS FOR FAR FIELD ACOUSTIC ANALYSIS

Finite element analysis of transient acoustic phenomena on unbounded exterior domains is very common in engineering analysis. In these problems there is a common need to compute the acoustic pressure at points outside of the acoustic mesh, since meshing to points of interest is impractical in many scenarios. In aeroacoustic calculations, for example, the acoustic pressure may be required at tens or hundreds of meters from the structure. In these cases, a method is needed for post-processing the acoustic results to compute the response at far-field points. In this paper, we compare two methods for computing far-field acoustic pressures, one derived directly from the infinite element solution, and the other from the transient version of the Kirchhoff integral. Here, we show that the infinite element approach alleviates the large storage requirements that are typical of Kirchhoff integral and related procedures, and also does not suffer from loss of accuracy that is an inherent part of computing numerical derivatives in the Kirchhoff integral. In order to further speed up and streamline the process of computing the acoustic response at points outside of the mesh, we also address the nonlinear iterative procedure needed for locating parametric coordinates within the host infinite element of far-field points, the parallelization of the overall process, linear solver requirements, and system stability considerations.

Domain decomposition solvers for PDEs : some basics, practical tools, and new developments

The first part of this talk provides a basic introduction to the building blocks of domain decomposition solvers. Specific details are given for both the classical overlapping Schwarz (OS) algorithm and a recent iterative substructuring (IS) approach called balancing domain decomposition by constraints (BDDC). A more recent hybrid OS-IS approach is also described. The success of domain decomposition solvers depends critically on the coarse space. Similarities and differences between the coarse spaces for OS and BDDC approaches are discussed, along with how they can be obtained from discrete harmonic extensions. Connections are also made between coarse spaces and multiscale modeling approaches from computational mechanics. As a specific example, details are provided on constructing coarse spaces for incompressible fluid problems. The next part of the talk deals with a variety of implementation details for domain decomposition solvers. These include mesh partitioning options, local and global solver options, reducing the coarse space dimension, dealing with constraint equations, residual weighting to accelerate the convergence of OS methods, and recycling of Krylov spaces to efficiently solve problems with multiple right hand sides. Some potential bottlenecks and remedies for domain decomposition solvers are also discussed. The final part of the talk concerns some recent theoretical advances, new algorithms, and open questions in the analysis of domain decomposition solvers. The focus will be primarily on the work of the speaker and his colleagues on elasticity, fluid mechanics, problems in H(curl), and the analysis of subdomains with irregular boundaries.

Some domain decomposition algorithms for mixed formulations of elasticity and incompressible fluids

In this talk, we present a collection of domain decomposition algorithms for mixed finite element formulations of elasticity and incompressible fluids. The key component of each of these algorithms is the coarse space. Here, the coarse spaces are obtained in an algebraic manner by harmonically extending coarse boundary data. Various aspects of the coarse spaces are discussed for both continuous and discontinuous interpolation of pressure. Further, both classical overlapping Schwarz and hybrid iterative substructuring preconditioners are described. Numerical results are presented for almost incompressible elasticity and the Navier Stokes equations which demonstrate the utility of the methods for both structured and irregular mesh decompositions. We also discuss a simple residual scaling approach which often leads to significant reductions in iterations for these algorithms.

Advanced computing hardware and software written to exploit massively parallel architectures greatly facilitate the computation of extremely large problems. On the other hand, these tools, though enabling higher fidelity models, have often resulted in much longer run-times and turn-around-times in providing answers to engineering problems. The impediments include smaller elements and consequently smaller time steps, much larger systems of equations to solve, and the inclusion of nonlinearities that had been ignored in days when lower fidelity models were the norm. The research effort reported focuses on the accelerating the analysis process for structural dynamics though combinations of model reduction and mitigation of some factors that lead to over-meshing.

A family of energy minimizing coarse spaces for overlapping schwarz preconditioners

A simple and effective approach is presented to construct coarse spaces for overlapping Schwarz preconditioners. The approach is based on energy minimizing extensions of coarse trace spaces, and can be viewed as a generalization of earlier work by Dryja, Smith, and Widlund. The use of these coarse spaces in overlapping Schwarz preconditioners leads to condition numbers bounded by C(1 + H/δ)(1 + log(H/h)) for certain problems when coefficient jumps are aligned with subdomain boundaries. For problems without coefficient jumps, it is possible to remove the log(H/h) factor in this bound by a suitable enrichment of the coarse space. Comparisons are made with the coarse spaces of two other substructuring preconditioners. Numerical examples are also presented for a variety of problems.

The Balancing Domain Decomposition by Constraints (BDDC) method is the most advanced method from the Balancing family of iterative substructuring methods for the solution of large systems of linear algebraic equations arising from discretization of elliptic boundary value problems. In the case of many substructures, solving the coarse problem exactly becomes a bottleneck. Since the coarse problem in BDDC has the same structure as the original problem, it is straightforward to apply the BDDC method recursively to solve the coarse problem only approximately. In this paper, we formulate a new family of abstract Multispace BDDC methods and give condition number bounds from the abstract additive Schwarz preconditioning theory. The Multilevel BDDC is then treated as a special case of the Multispace BDDC and abstract multilevel condition number bounds are given. The abstract bounds yield polylogarithmic condition number bounds for an arbitrary fixed number of levels and scalar elliptic problems discretized by finite elements in two and three spatial dimensions. Preconditioning of Saddle Point Systems by Substructuring and a Penalty Approach

The focus of this paper is a penalty-based strategy for preconditioning elliptic saddle point systems. As the starting point, we consider the regularization approach of Axelsson in which a related linear system, differing only in the (2,2) block of the coefficient matrix, is introduced. By choosing this block to be negative definite, the dual unknowns of the related system can be eliminated resulting in a positive definite primal Schur complement. Rather than solving the Schur complement system exactly, an approximate solution is obtained using a substructuring preconditioner. The approximate primal solution together with the recovered dual solution then define the preconditioned residual for the original system.

Stabilization of low-order mixed finite elements for the stokes equations

We present a new family of stabilized methods for the Stokes problem. The focus of the paper is on the lowest order velocity-pressure pairs. While not LBB compliant, their simplicity and attractive computational properties make these pairs a popular choice in engineering practice. Our stabilization approach is motivated by terms that characterize the LBB "deficiency" of the unstable spaces. The stabilized methods are defined by using these terms to modify the saddle-point Lagrangian associated with the Stokes equations. The new stabilized methods offer a number of attractive computational properties. In contrast to other stabilization procedures, they are parameter free, do not require calculation of higher order derivatives or edge-based data structures, and always lead to symmetric linear systems. Furthermore, the new methods are unconditionally stable, achieve optimal accuracy with respect to solution regularity, and have simple and straightforward implementations. We present numerical results in two and three dimensions that showcase the excellent stability and accuracy of the new methods. © 2006 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

A study of two domain decomposition preconditioners

Large-scale finite element analysis often requires the iterative solution of equations with many unknowns. Preconditioners based on domain decomposition concepts have proven effective at accelerating the convergence of iterative methods like conjugate gradients for such problems. A study of two new domain decomposition preconditioners is presented here. The first is based on a substructuring approach and can viewed as a primal counterpart of the dual-primal variant of the finite element tearing and interconnecting method called FETI-DP. The second uses an algebraic approach to construct a coarse problem for a classic overlapping Schwarz method. The numerical properties of both preconditioners are shown to scale well with problem size. Although developed primarily for structural mechanics applications, the preconditioners are also useful for other problems types. Detailed descriptions of the two preconditioners along with numerical results are included.

Convergence of a balancing domain decomposition by constraints and energy minimization

A convergence theory is presented for a substructuring preconditioner based on constrained energy minimization concepts. The substructure spaces consist of local functions with zero values of the constraints, while the coarse space consists of minimal energy functions with the constraint values continuous across substructure interfaces. In applications, the constraints include values at comers and optionally averages on edges and faces. The preconditioner is reformulated as an additive Schwarz method and analysed by building on existing results for balancing domain decomposition. The main result is a bound on the condition number based on inequalities involving the matrices of the preconditioner. Estimates of the form C(1 + log 2(H/h)) are obtained under the standard assumptions of substructuring theory. Computational results demonstrating the performance of method are included. Finite element meshing approached as a global minimization process

The ability to generate a suitable finite element mesh in an automatic fashion is becoming the key to being able to automate the entire engineering analysis process. However, placing an all-hexahedron mesh in a general three-dimensional body continues to be an elusive goal. The approach investigated in this research is fundamentally different from any other that is known of by the authors. A physical analogy viewpoint is used to formulate the actual meshing problem which constructs a global mathematical description of the problem. The analogy used was that of minimizing the electrical potential of a system charged particles within a charged domain. The particles in the presented analogy represent duals to mesh elements (i.e., quads or hexes). Particle movement is governed by a mathematical functional which accounts for inter-particles repulsive, attractive and alignment forces. This functional is minimized to find the optimal location and orientation of each particle. After the particles are connected a mesh can be easily resolved. The mathematical description for this problem is as easy to formulate in three-dimensions as it is in two- or one-dimensions. The meshing algorithm was developed within CoMeT. It can solve the two-dimensional meshing problem for convex and concave geometries in a purely automated fashion. Investigation of the robustness of the technique has shown a success rate of approximately 99% for the two-dimensional geometries tested. Run times to mesh a 100 element complex geometry were typically in the 10 minute range. Efficiency of the technique is still an issue that needs to be addressed. Performance is an issue that is critical for most engineers generating meshes. It was not for this project. The primary focus of this work was to investigate and evaluate a meshing algorithm/philosophy with efficiency issues being secondary. The algorithm was also extended to mesh three-dimensional geometries. Unfortunately, only simple geometries were tested before this project ended. The primary complexity in the extension was in the connectivity problem formulation. Defining all of the interparticle interactions that occur in three-dimensions and expressing them in mathematical relationships is very difficult.

Experimental-based modeling of a support structure as part of a full system model

Structural dynamic systems are often attached to a support structure to simulate proper boundary conditions during testing. In some cases the support structure is fairly simple and can be modeled by discrete springs and dampers. In other cases the desired test conditions necessitate the use of a support structural that introduces dynamics of its own. For such cases a more complex structural dynamic model is required to simulate the response of the full combined system. In this paper experimental frequency response functions, admittance function modeling concepts, and least squares reductions are used to develop a support structure model including both translational and rotational degrees of freedom at an attachment location. Subsequently, the modes of the support structure are estimated, and a NASTRAN model is created for attachment to the tested system.
