Celebrated annually in June, National Safety Month is an important opportunity to raise awareness about safety and health in the workplace. Throughout the month, Sandia Health Benefits and Employee Services and Safety organizations at the Livermore and Albuquerque campuses teamed up to host an array of speakers, activities and events.

Crossing the Ironman Boulder finish line in June was “the most surreal moment” of Sandian Sara Draper’s life. Reflecting on her journey, Sara credits in part Sandia’s culture encouraging work-life balance and the support she received from her manager and coworkers, as well as the resources available to employees, such as access to fitness facilities and health and nutrition guidance.
Steve Younger joins roundtable to expand trades in New Mexico
Labs Director Steve Younger met with New Mexico 3rd District Congressman Ben Ray Luján at a recent forum to discuss the ACCESS Act, which would establish a five-year grant program run by DOE to create apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs in colleges and technical education schools to fill nuclear industry jobs at national laboratories.

Budgets double for small business assistance projects
Sandia will be doubling the amount of technical assistance it provides to small businesses, following legislation signed into New Mexico state law this year. The new law, which took effect July 1, raises the cap on the value of services Sandia and Los Alamos national laboratories can offer New Mexico small businesses.
Sandia revs its engines
The Labs’ annual car show, which started out as a team-building activity for Logistics Operations, roared to life again at Sandia this spring for its sixth year. Held on the first Thursday in May, the show this year featured 52 cars and six motorcycles from members of the workforce around the Labs.

EXERCISE: Drone attack, pipe bomb put Sandia to the test
Sandia/California’s medical staff and Protective Force were put to the test last month during a simulated attack involving a drone and a pipe bomb. The exercise also tested the emergency alert system used to notify members of the workforce.
