In an extraordinary year that tore many at the Labs away from their extended family and work colleagues, Sandia employees came together to support charities and projects that contribute to resilience within its New Mexico and California communities.
At a time when many are struggling with the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Volunteers from the Labs' California site led efforts again this year to collect donated coats and toys for charitable campaigns.
The International Atomic Energy Agency selected year-round intern Lauren Crabtree for its inaugural Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Program to recognize her studies in nuclear engineering at the University of New Mexico.
Volunteers donated 250 frozen turkeys and more than $10K during this year’s Take a Frozen Turkey to Work Day, hosted by Sandia in partnership with Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union, Roadrunner Food Bank and other local pantries.
Sandia researchers got creative this year to develop virtual tours, video experiments and more to support the annual New Mexico Science Fiesta Expo, an interactive learning event for children of all ages from across the state. YouTube videos of many of the events are still available online.
Sandia’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month went mostly virtual this year, with video presentations and other digital events, including youth art contests, honoring HENAAC winners, sharing a booklet of recipes, sayings and wisdom and more. The car show was the only live event, but not the only celebration.
Volunteers from Sandia’s California site donated 206 backpacks filled with needed supplies this year to children of local military families. This year’s virtual donation event offered participants options to donate electronically or make direct purchases from an Amazon wish list. The next donation event, One Warm Coat, is happening now through Oct. 31.
Sandia engineer Sandra Begay has earned the AISES 2020 Indigenous Excellence Award in recognition of her substantial work to advance opportunities for Indigenous students and professionals in science, technology, engineering and math education and careers.
When there is a need, Sandia shows up. This year, the Sandia Gives campaign has set a goal to increase employee participation from 45% to 50%, to continue the Labs’ long-standing commitment to our communities.
