Yuliya Preger and Valerio De Angelis have been awarded $2.1 million for Sandia National Laboratories as part of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) ROVI program through the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED). This funding, which will support activities from June 2024 to June 2027, builds on a previous award of $1.2 million from the Office of Electricity (OE).
The primary objective of the ROVI program is to utilize modeling and accelerated testing to predict and extend the lifetime of batteries in fielded systems. The insights gained from this program will inform the data collection requirements for energy storage demonstration projects funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL).
Sandia’s focus within the ROVI initiative includes developing data infrastructure, modeling zinc battery performance, and conducting accelerated testing, as well as modeling and testing for thermal storage systems. The project involves collaboration with several national laboratories, including Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Idaho National Laboratory (INL), National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), with PNNL serving as the lead lab.
Overall, the ROVI team has secured a total of $17.7 million in funding from both the Office of Electricity and the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations.
