Biography

Nicholas Gurule began working with in the Distributed Energy Technologies Laboratory (DETL) at Sandia in 2016 as a student intern while finishing his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and became a member of staff after completing his master’s degree in 2019.

In his time at Sandia, he has helped evaluate the IEEE P1547.1 draft test standard, analyzed various grid-following and grid-forming devices under normal and abnormal operating conditions, helped develop new methods for testing grid forming inverters in power hardware-in-the-loop, worked in developing advanced current sensors using magneto-elastic materials and assisted in the development of numerous test platforms for inverter testing.

Since September of 2021, Nicholas has worked as an Electrical Safety Advisor assisting members of the workforce to inform them of requirements to ensure work can be performed safely and effectively. Additionally, in August 2022, he took over as lab manager of the DETL facility, overseeing lab operations. His work has resulted in two patent applications, and over 20 publications as a lead or coauthor.
