Biography

Matthew Lave is a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff in the Renewable and Distributed Systems Integration Group. He focuses on enabling the implementation of renewable and resilient energy systems. His work has included monitoring, analysis, and modeling of the grid integration of solar photovoltaics (PV), electric vehicles (EVs), wind, battery storage, and other power systems for both performance assessment and grid integration studies.

Highlights of his work include creation of the Wavelet Variability Model (WVM) to model spatial smoothing of PV system output; successfully executing a large team effort to collect and disseminate lab capabilities as PI for the Grid Modernization Laboratory Consortium (GMLC) Testing Network and Open Library project with team members from 10 different National Labs; and leadership of technical assistance efforts to support energy transitions in island and remote communities.

Matthew has led several Sandia projects to provide technical assistance to Puerto Rico in designing the recovery of the electric grid after Hurricanes Maria and Fiona, including Sandia’s involvement in the PR100 project (PR100.gov) and other technical assistance efforts focused on microgrid design and energy resilient solutions.

Education
