Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) researchers will present and exhibit at the upcoming American Solar Energy Society (ASES) Solar 2022 conference on June 21-24, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The conference will be held on the University of New Mexico’s (UNM) campus, and feature esteemed keynotes such as Michelle Lujan Grisham, New Mexico Governor; Martin Heinrich, United States Senator for New Mexico; Ron Darnell, Senior Vice President for Public Policy at PNM; and Sandia’s Sandra Begay, Principal Member of the Technical Staff.
This year’s conference theme is “Energy Transition with Economic Justice,” focusing on an equitable renewable energy transformation. Conference attendees will have the opportunity to network with members of the solar industry and share ideas on topics ranging from legislation and policy, equity, and solar design to clean transportation and many others during the four-day conference.
Sandia will provide a tour of the Photovoltaic Systems Evaluation Laboratory (PSEL) and the National Solar Thermal Test Facility (NSTTF), during the afternoon of June 24, 2022, for pre-registered conference participants. The trip will include a comprehensive walking tour of the facilities, and depending on the weather, visitors may observe operating concentrating systems and may also be able to access the top of the solar tower.
Sandia solar conference presenters will include:
- Cliff Ho, “Regional Policy Design for Solar and Other Advanced Energy Technologies,” on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, from 2:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Cliff will present during a session highlighting innovative policy mechanisms being used to spur the deployment of solar, energy efficiency, battery storage, electric vehicles, and related advanced energy forms across the United States.
- Joshua Stein, “Grid & PV Track: Material Design and Advancing PV Tech,” on Wednesday June 22, 2022, from 2:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Josh will present on Perovskite PV and how to support the commercialization of this exciting new technology.
- Hendrik Frederik Laubscher, “Grid & PV Track: Material Design and Advancing PV Tech,” on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, from 2:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Henk will present on solar flux sensor development and calibration for commercial concentrating solar power research and application.
- Madhuri Kumari, “Grid & PV Track: Grid Integration & Energy Storage,” on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, from 10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. on an open-source toolkit to determine module capacity using ASTM E2484-13 Standards.
- Benjamin Pierce, “Grid & PV Track: Material Design and Advancing PV Tech,” on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, from 2:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. on cloud segmentation and motion tracking in sky images. This work presents a vital piece of a single axis tracking control algorithm that is currently in development.
- Summer Ferreira, “Energy Transformation Track: Rooftop Solar Efforts,” on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.
- Sandra Begay, Keynote Session, “Solar Design, Architecture, and the Future of Solar Education,” on Friday, June 24, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Abraham Ellis, Sandia National Laboratories & ASES Board Vice Chair, will moderate a panel including Ed Mazria, Architecture 2030; Sandra Begay, Principal Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories; and Gigi Goldman and Hal Aronson, Co-Founders of We Share Solar.
- Birk Jones, “Clean Transportation,” on Friday, June 24, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. As moderator, Birk will explore environmentally just approaches to sustainable, decarbonizing transportation.
Solar staff will also participate in a poster session to be held Wednesday, June 22, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. that will include work by Cliff Ho, Jennifer Braid, Angelique Montgomery, Lelia Deville, and Summer Ferreira.
Sandians and other conference attendees are encouraged to stop by the Sandia exhibit table located in the UNM Student Union Center second-floor Navajo Lounge to learn more about Sandia’s solar programs. Sandia Business Development colleagues will be present on Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. For those who are unable to attend in person, facilitators have also set up a virtual Sandia booth.
Special conference events will include the New Mexico Solar Energy Association (NMSEA) Solar Fiesta and EV Show, taking place Friday, June 24, 2022, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the University of New Mexico’s Cornell Mall, next to the Student Union building. The outdoor event is open to the public, which is invited to “celebrate the sun and our electric future.” Attendees will have the opportunity to talk to solar company owners and experts all in one place, ask real electric vehicle owners questions about their experiences, learn about careers in solar and wind—and for the kids—participate in hands-on STEM activities. There will also be a giant solar cooker and music provided. Admission and parking are free.
