Making the nation’s electric grid more resilient to electromagnetic events

An electromagnetic event, while not likely, could disrupt power over a large region of our nation, and mitigation efforts should be considered by grid operators and other stakeholders, according to an article recently published by three Sandia National Laboratories researchers. “Toward an Electromagnetic Event Resilient Grid,” published April 2021 in Proceedings of the IEEE, shares the researchers’ vision of achieving an electric grid that is resilient to an electromagnetic event. The report also outlines the various research avenues Sandia is pursuing to ensure a more resilient grid for the nation.
