6. Educational Benefits

Sandia supports degree programs through campus courses, videotape, satellite, internet, and interactive television.

Our University-based educational assistance programs:

  • SNL may provide tuition assistance to regular full-time or part-time eligible employees who are pursuing courses or degree programs at U.S. accredited institutions or accredited distance learning facilities that will result in college credit. The courses and/or degree field must be job-related or related to positions within SNL that are reasonably attainable by the employee. Classes can be taken in degree or non-degree status. SNL pays tuition directly to the university.

    Distance Learning Program

    Distance Learning Program (DLP) allows Sandians to take classes at their leisure or on site. Distance learning takes place when an instructor and student(s) are separated by physical distance, and some form of telecommunications technology is used to obtain the education required. Delivery Methods for the DLP are as follows:

    • Instructional television (ITV)
    • Satellite
    • CD-ROM
    • Internet

    Note: UNM ITV courses are broadcast from a classroom or studio and are interactive-one-way video, two-way audio.

    Eligibility

    • Full-time regular employees
    • Part-time regular employees
    • Be on-roll as a full time equivalency for a minimum of one year

    Benefits

    • Payment of tuition for two courses per semester equivalency
    • Up to $3,500 per calendar year for undergraduates
    • Up to $6,000 per calendar year for graduates
    • Employee selects school to attend from list of key/regional universities established by Sandia. University credit-based courses can be job-related or Sandia career-related, taken in degree or non-degree status.

    Requirements

    • Courses must be taken outside of working hours on employee’s own time
    • A grade of "B" or better must be earned by all students

    Additional Benefits for DLP

    • No travel costs to out-of-state universities
    • No driving to campus
    • No parking hassles
    • Open network for on-line courses
    • Proctoring services except UNM and TVI courses

Description

The University Part-time Program (UPT) provides full-time regular employees with an opportunity to obtain a Bachelor’s or graduate degree on a part-time basis while working at SNL the remaining time. UPT is to be utilized when SNL business needs require an employee to obtain the degree on an accelerated basis to enhance his or her current job assignment rather than pursuing it through TAP.

Eligibility

Full-time regular employees are eligible for UPT if they meet all of the following criteria:

  • Been on roll for a minimum of one year
  • Participated in at least one performance period and sustained a "FC" or better
  • Have strong academic credentials

Benefits

  • Employees remain classified as full-time while working part-time and attending school the remaining half time
  • Payment of tuition without annual caps

Requirements

Must earn degree as follows:
  • Bachelors 36 months
  • Masters 24 months
  • Doctorate 36 months
  • Undergraduates "C" or better
  • Graduates "B" or better
  • Service requirement of one for one
Undergraduate students:
  • 12 hours during fall/spring
  • 6 hours during summer
Graduate students:
  • 9 hours during fall/spring
  • 4 hours during summer

Description

The Special Masters Program (SMP) helps SNL fill critical and urgent business needs with specialized degree requirements that enhance a full-time regular employee’s ability to perform SNL job assignments in support of SNL’s mission.

Eligibility

Full-time regular employees are eligible for nomination for SMP participation if they are classified in the MLS or MTS ladder and meet all of the following criteria:

  • Been on roll for a minimum of one year
  • Participated in at least one performance period and sustained a "FC" or better
  • Have strong academic credentials
  • Have a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree

Benefits

  • Pursue a graduate degree on a full-time basis while remaining on roll but being absent from SNL
  • Receive a reduced salary that does not change during program participation (from 60% to 75% based on credited service post bachelors)
  • Full-time regular employee benefits while in program with the exception of vacation accrual
  • Payment of tuition without annual caps
  • Relocation benefits
  • Campus visit

Requirements

  • Master’s degree must be earned in four consecutive semesters
  • "B" or better per course
  • Service requirement of one for one

Description

The Doctoral Study Program (DSP) helps SNL fill critical and urgent business needs with specialized degree requirements that enhance a full-time regular employee’s ability to perform SNL job assignments in support of SNL’s mission.

Eligibility

Full-time regular employees are eligible for nomination for DSP participation if they are classified in the MLS or MTS ladder and meet all of the following criteria:

  • Been on roll for a minimum of one year
  • Participated in at least one performance period and sustained a "FC" or better
  • Have strong academic credentials
  • Have a Master of Science degree

Benefits

  • Pursue a graduate degree on a full-time basis while remaining on roll but being absent from SNL
  • Receive a reduced salary that does not change during program participation (from 60% to 75% based on credited service post bachelors)
  • Full-time regular employee benefits while in program with the exception of vacation accrual
  • Payment of tuition without annual caps
  • Relocation benefits
  • Campus visit

Requirements

  • PhD must be earned within three years
  • "B" or better per course
  • Service requirement of one for one

8. Retirement

Employees may participate in one of the following defined contribution 401(k) savings plans:

  • Savings and Income Plan (for non-union employees)
  • Savings and Security Plan (for union represented employees)

Employees may elect to contribute 2% to 18% of their eligible pay, subject to IRS limitations, on a pre-tax, after-tax, or Roth 401(k) basis. Sandia will match 2/3 of the first 6% of the employee’s contributions after one year of service for employees on roll before 1/1/09; or immediately for non-union employees hired or re-hired on or after 1/1/09. Employees’ contributions and Sandia’s matching contribution are vested immediately.

Non-union employees hired or re-hired on or after 1/1/09 will automatically receive an additional service-based contribution subject to a three year vesting requirement:

Employees may invest their account balances among 22 investment options.
